John Richard Archer was born in Liverpool in 1863. He became the first black man to hold office in England, as Mayor of Battersea. A staunch anti-vivisectionist, he was involved in a dispute over the famous brown dog statue, which was erected to mark the suffering of vivisected animals. The statue was repeatedly attacked by medical students.
